Death entered the portals of our city last night and removed one of East Palestine's representative citizens, James Fleming, from his home on Garfield avenue. Confined to his bed for about a week, he passed away at 11:30 last evening from a heart ailment. He was approaching his 84th birthday anniversary, being born at Wigan, England, April 14, 1854, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Fleming. Eleven children born to this union lived to be over 80 years of age. Wigan was in the heart of the coal mining region and at the age of 8, decedent first entered the mines. He came to America at the age of 24, or in 1878. Still interested in mining, he first settled in the Sharon area and a few years later came to East Palestine and here his life has largely paralelled the growth and importance of the coal in the economic life of our city. Possessed of unusual diligence in what ever his hands found to do, and added to that a business acumen far above the average he, finally, came to be a coal operator and for many years was identified as one of the proprietors of the Wheat Hill Coal company. Nothing saddened him more than that with the encroachments of age, he was compelled one by one to lay aside the responsibilities of an active life. On Dec. 26, 1881 he was married to Miss Sarah Atchison of this city, the ceremony being performed by the resident M. E. pastor of that day-the Rev. Samuel Crouse. It is recalled that Mrs. Fleming was laid to rest just a year ago today. To this union four children were born: Attorney William A. Fleming, victim of an automobile accident in North Dakota, Nov. 18 last; Mrs. Eliza born; Andrew O. Fleming, Community Corporation manager in Youngstown; and Prof Robert L Fleming of Canfield, an instuctor in South High School, Youngstown. There are fourteen grandchildren remaing. Decendent was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church and for many years a member of the official board of the organization. To this church he gave a full measure of devotion, a devotion that paralelled only the interest he showed to those in his family circle. He stood four-square behind every movement that looked to social or civic betterment. He faced every issue unflinchingly and was the embodiment of candor and integrity. The body now rests at the Van Dyke Funeral home and may be viewed there this evening and Wednesday evening from 7 to 9. Funeral services, conducted by his pastor, Rev. D. P. Mueller, will take place at the Van Dyke chapel, Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Glenview cemetery. Due to a mis-print in the original obituary, obtained names of Andrew and Eliza from 1900 & 1910 census. Eliza Fleming's married name only shows "born".
