Description	:	The citizens of Seward were shocked last Sunday about 11 o'clock when the report spread rapidly over town that J. F. Merritt had just expired. It was generally known that he was ill, but only a few knew of the serious nature of his illness. He had not been well since January, but it was only during the past three weeks that his illness took a serious turn, which was a complication of ailments, one serious feature being a severe pain in the lower part of his bowels, at frequent intervals, and at which times he suffered greatly. It was generally known that he was ill, but only a few knew of the serious nature of his illness. He had not been well since January, but it was only during the past three weeks that his illness took a serious turn, which was a complication of ailments, one serious feature being a severe pain in the lower part of his bowels, at frequent intervals, and at which times he suffered greatly. Mr. Merritt was born in the village of Hampstead, Ontario, Canada, and was 32 years old the 4th of last January. In the spring of 1887, he came to De Witt, Saline County, Nebraska, where he was married to Miss May Nelson. Four children were born to them, three sons and one daughter, who, with the wife and mother are left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. Mr. Merritt conducted a store for some time at Blue Valley, York county, Nebraska for Dewitt Eager, removing from there to Beaver Crossing, and about two years ago, came to Seward and purchased the bakery and restaurant business from D. C. Pettit, which business he has successfully conducted. He leaves four brothers, one sister and an aged mother who resides with his sister, Mrs. Andrew Coutts, at Newdale, Manitoba. Three of the brothers, John of Pauline, Nebraska, R. H. of Blue Hill, Nebraska and Alfred of Red Cloud, Nebraska, were present at the funeral. He was buried by the Masons after services at the family residence by Rev. Dr. Gallagher, yesterday forenoon, interment being in Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Merritt was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, in which order he carried an insurance of $1,000. Fred Merritt was a pleasant, genial gentleman, and was popular with everyone who knew him, and will be greatly missed in the business circles of Seward, as well as by his little family which has the warmest sympathy of the entire community in their irreparable loss.
