James (Jim) was educated in their neighborhood school through the 8th grade. The farm was 245 acres and plenty of work for all, raising large crops, Durham cattle, Duroc Red hogs and Belgium horses. Read More	History of Jim Heslop, written in the 1980s: James George Heslop was born on the family farm five miles southwest of Alden to George A and Mary J Heslop on Feb 29, 1896 There were four children--Bess, Lee, Roy, who died in early childhood, and James. James (Jim) was educated in their neighborhood school through the 8th grade. The farm was 245 acres and plenty of work for all, raising large crops, Durham cattle, Duroc Red hogs and Belgium horses. There was always time though to help neighbors and for friendly visits. Jim left the farm for army service in World War 1 on Sept---. His family retired from farming and moved to Alden to live. His sister Bess--Mrs Will Hansen with her husband rented the farm then for several years. Jim was discharged from service on Dec 26, 1919, and returned to Alden to live. Jim then began work with L C Wood Road Construction Company, working mostly in Hardin county. In June--, he was hired by the State to work on road patrol work. Later the county and State divided their work and Jim decided to continue with Hardin county. In 1926, Jim Married Kathryn Jones of Alden, a teacher there. They lived first in Iowa Falls, then Alden and in 1931, moved to Eldora where Jim was hired as Shop foreman in the County Shop. As more road work developed, more complicated machinery, was used, many more men employed, so by 1957, Jim became Hardin County Maintenance Superintendent to supervise the men, roads and equipement. This work he continued until he retired in Jan 1973. Jim and Kathryn's children are Lois Lee, Mary Lu, James Gould, and Nancy Kay. All were involved in activities of the Congregatinal Church and our school. Jim and Kathryn held several offfices in the church and Jim served on the School Board for 6 years. He was active in the Masonic Lodge both in Alden and Eldora, all in adult life, also a 62 yr member of American Legion . Kathryn was active in that auxiliary and also, the Hospital auxiliary projects. As to the family: Lois married Keith M Strother-Vice president of Hardin County Saving Bank and Lois is secreatary to the Elementry School Principal. Their children; Kay is a teacher in Brazil and son Jim and wife, Nancy, live in Des Moines, where Jim works for Electronic Data Sytems and Nancy for Heritage Cable TV. James G the son--married Rita Jacobs of Eldora. Jim is Asst Supt of Schools at Banning, Calif. and Rita is a surgicall nurse there. Their children are; David, who with his wife Debbie are in College at Irvine, Cal; Mark attends College in Hays KS. Steven has a scholarship at USC, Los Angeles, and Jaime Lynn is in her second year at San Bernardino Jr College. Mary Lu, married Eugene Lucus, Madrid, IA and they live in Keokuk, IA, where they manage their own job printing company. Their children are Susan -Mrs Ron VerDught-Jeff at Ames in ISU, and Jennifer, a senior at Keokuk High School and Scott their 10 yr old. Nancy married Don Bekemeier, also of Eldora and they live in Northhampton, Mass, where they are in business with Hampshire Imports. Their children are: Nate, New Bedford, Mass; Kathy in Pittsfield, Mass; and Jon at home. And so Jim and Kathryn are enjoying retirement years in Eldora, Hardin County, keeping up when possible with local, state and national events. They love reminiscing with old friends and new, also--the good visits from children and grandchildren, all of this makes for a busy, contented life for the Heslops.
