Children (list is a work in progress)-- Addie May StJohn Jennings 1866 – 1922 Minnie StJohn 1869 – 1869 Henry Gerdell (Dell) StJohn 1873 – 1937 ----- OBIT-- [NOTE: Alternate spelling of name-- Jamin G St John] Jamin Gerdell St John was born in Cattaraugus County, New York, on Dec. 3, 1842, and died at Marshalltown, Iowa, on Tuesday, Nov, 18, 1924 at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 15 days, death being due to the infirmities attendant upon old age, with complications which caused him great suffering during the past several months. More than a year ago, by his own preference, he went to the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown, and there with the exception of one or two brief visits to his old friends in Waverly, he was cared for until the time of his death. During these past several months his son, H.G. St. John of this city, was with him almost constantly, giving him untiring care and tender attention. Mr. St. John was the ninth child in a family of twelve, and the last one to be called in death. He was a son of Jason Gerdell St. John and Nancy Gillette St. John. He received his early education in the schools of New York State, coming west when he was fifteen years of age. He came direct to Waverly, and with the exception of the years he spent in army service, all his life was lived in this city. In 1861 he enlisted for service in the Civil War, and in 1864, when home on furlough, he was married at Waterloo to Miss Emma A. Rose. Almost immediately thereafter he returned to his regiment, the Ninth Iowa, which was a part of the 15th army corps commanded by General John A. Logan. He served until the close of the war, returning then to Waverly to resume his occupation of mason and plaster, at which work he continued as long as his health and strength would permit. Mr. St. John was of a genial and happy disposition, and readily made friends wherever he went. His work took him to many localities, and he enjoed a wide acquaintance. Mr. and Mrs. St. John were the parents of three children. One daughter died in infancy, the other daughter, Mrs. Addie Jennings, died suddenly two years ago last April. Mrs. St. John herself died two years ago last September. One son, H. G. (Dell) St. John of this city survives. There are left also two grandchildren, George Jennings of Independence and Mrs. Pearl Jennings Moore of Sibley, together with several great grandchildren. Mr. St. John was a member of Robbins Post, G. A. R., and for about thirty-five years had served as chaplain of the Post. Eleven of his comrades were present in a body at his funeral, which was held last Thursday afternoon from the Kaiser Funeral Chapel. The services were conducted by Rev. J. D. Clinton of Cedar Rapids, former pastor of the local Methodist church of which Mr. St. John was a member. Burial was in Harlington Cemetery, where a detachment of uniformed men from the American Legion joined with the G. A. R. men in the burial service, firing a military salute and sounding taps above the open grave of the dead soldier of the Grand Army of the Republic.
