Description	:	Son of John and Martha Cavet Wallace per 1925 census The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers (1910) and other records indicate that, during the Civil War, James enlisted in the Union Army on August 22, 1862. He was mustered into Company F at Camp Franklin on Eagle Point in Dubuque and on September 9, the regiment was mustered into service also at Camp Franklin. They left for war on board the sidewheel steamer Henry Clay and two barges tied alongside on September 16, 1862. On June 30, 1863, they were at Vicksburg when one of his comrades ,... On June 30, 1863, they were at Vicksburg when one of his comrades , Robert Strane, wrote that "James Wallace is stout and harty ." " On March 8, 1864, Robert wrote that "James Wallace has not been very well for 3 or 4 days. He has the disease which is so well known to the soldier - it is the diarea. But James is a good deal better today. Effective August 2, 1864, James was promoted from Private to 5th Corporal. On September 15, 1864, Robert wrote that "James Wallace is on picket."
