Description	:	JAMES H. BAKER was born April 8, 1819 in Harrison County, Ohio to John Doutful and Elizabeth Baker. He married twice, first to Susannah (Bartow) Baker on June 2, 1942 in Harrison County, Ohio. To this marriage where born 5 children: George P. Baker (1846-1901) Alpheus B. Baker (1846-1859) Hatilda Jane Baker (1859-1851) Sarah Baker (1853-1870) Susan Baker (1854-1854) James second marriage was to Priscilla McCormick and they united in marriage January 12, 1862 in Jefferson County, Iowa. They had a son named James Albert Baker. James Baker was the first postmaster of the Baker Post Office which was established August 27, 1861 in Jefferson county and was 7 miles north of Fairfield in Section 23 of Blackhawk Township. This postoffice was their home and he remainded the postmaster until his death in 1891. He died somewhere near the home. His son George and wife Asenath (Ross) continued living in the home and running the post office until June of 1901 when the post office was discontinued. George died April 30, 1901 and his wife ran the post office until June. The post office was torn down in 1967. Baker never did become a town. James Baker served in the military Cival War in Company D. 7th Iowa Cav. There is no headstone. This family information is added by Michele Ball for great-granddaughter Marsha (Branson) Pratt.
