Description	:	James H. Reid was born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, October 24, 1836. His parents, John Reid and Mahala Hammond Reid, had a family of four sons and one daughter. In 1856 they left their Virginia home and came to Davenport, Iowa, settling on a farm six miles southwest, in Scott County. His parents, John Reid and Mahala Hammond Reid, had a family of four sons and one daughter. In 1856 they left their Virginia home and came to Davenport, Iowa, settling on a farm six miles southwest, in Scott County. The father died in 1864, at the age of 40 years, entrusting to James the care of the widowed mother, three brothers and one sister. This trust he most faithfully fulfilled. It was a labor of love, and tenderly did he care for his mother until she was called up higher at the age of 72 years. He had the great pleasure of seeing his brothers and sister well settled in life, and understood thier love and gratitude. The first break in this circle was the death of Samuel W., in 1901, at Newton, Iowa. The two remaining brothers are John H. Reid of Mitchellville and A.L. Reid of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, who were constantly with him during his last illness, and did all that human power could do to stay the hand of the Grim Reaper, but it was not to be so. The sister Mrs. Wesley Baker, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was not permitted to be with them on account of ill health. On March 9, 1865, he was married to Augusta Cecelia Metteer, who survives him. This this union was born four sons and two daughters, all grown to manhood and womanhood, and were permitted to be at his bedside and with the eleven grandchildren ever cherished his sacred memory. In 1873, he moved to this vicinity, which has been his home for 36 years. He retired from the farm in 1900, and spent the evening of his life in our little city. He was a charter member of the Congregational Church and ever faithful and loyal to it, his Savior personal, his trust simple and childlike. His whole life an emblem of purity which cast its reflection on all with whom he came in contact. He was an honored member of Crystal Lodge No 313, A.F.& A.M. and Silver Star Chapter O.E.S. The final illness was of short duration-- two and a half days, but he was ready and willing to go. He rested on the everlasting arms and the end was peace. The day was spent and the twilight gathered on in silence, Friday, September 3, 1909. He is only gone before, but we shall miss him. Yet he sleepeth well. We hold thee dear in memory. In the realms of light we shall behold thee with the redeemed. On the shores of Eternity we shall see together the triumph of the soul over death. The funeral occurred from the home at 2 p.m., Monday. It had been planned to hold the exercises on the spacious lawn, but rain prevented this. Rev. H.C. Rosenberger of Bondurant had charge of the services, preaching a brief discourse, reviewing his early acquaintance with the deceased and offering sincere words of consolation to the bereaved family. He was assisted in the service by Rev. P.H. Fisk.
