James was the son of William Hamilton, Sr. 1834-1910 and Margaret Davidson-Hamilton 1837-1925. He married Jessie Cummings Veatch, daughter of John Thomas Veatch, Sr. and Madora Bennett-Veatch, February 6, 1889, in Columbus, Kansas. They had at least two children: William Russell Hamilton 1888-1957 and Idyll Maude Hamilton 1890-1929. James Hamilton James Hamilton became president of the Hamilton Coal & Mercantile (or Mining) Company on his father's death in 1910. James was born in 1864 and was three years old, when he was brought to this country with three generations of his family. That family included his grandfather and mother, Andrew Sr and Jane Fox Hamilton, his father and mother, William Sr. and Margaret Davison Hamilton, several aunts, uncles and cousins. The family first settled in Braidwood, IL where, according to family history, James began work in coal mines when he was nine years old. Much later, as president of his own coal company he was active in labor negotiations and coal association's activities. When he was 32 years old he was appointed Kanas Superintendent of Mines, the "youngest superintendent ever to direct the state prison mine." He died in Weir in 1937. His wife Jesse Veatch Hamilton died in 1943. They are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Pittsburg.
