Dutton, in Los Angeles, Calif., Wednesday morning. Following the attack which came upon him before he arose from bed late in the morning, he was in a coma until 10:20 in the evening. His only son, State Representative James H. Vanderbeck Jr. of Virginia City, was notified of his death early Thursday and has completed arrangements to return the body to his old home in Virginia City for funeral services and burial Sunday. The rites will be held at the Masonic temple at 2 p.m, with Virginia City Lodge No. 1, A. F. & A. M., of which he has been a member 57 years, in charge. The body, accompanied by the daughter with whom he was living at his death, is expected to arrive Saturday and will be met either at Dillon or Butte by Charles E. Raper of the Raper Funeral Home and brought to his son's home. Sunday morning it will be removed to the Masonic temple. Virginia City Lodge No. 1 of Masons, which will conduct the funeral, paid their highest honor to a brother by awarding him a life membership in December, 1933, when they also presented him with a certificate and badge from the grand lodge in recognition of his 50th year of membership. The presentation was made during ceremonies held by No. 1, Montana's oldest Masonic lodge, celebrating the 70th anniversary of its institution, Mr. Vanderbeck joined the fraternity May 12, 1883. Mr. Vanderbeck was born in Pennsylvania March 17, 1857, the family moving while he was still a young boy to Michigan. There they cleared land for a farm, and established their home. At the age of 23, James H. Vanderbeck left for Montana, where he made his home continuously in Madison county until five years ago, when failing health caused him to go to California to live with his daughters and their families. Nov. 23, 1886, he was married to Miss Mary Alice Rank, sister of the late Charles W. Rank and the late Mrs. John S. Allen of Virginia City. They lived for a time at Adobetown, where most of their family of eight children were born, Mr. Vanderbeck, owning and operating a brick yard. Later they moved to Virginia City, where he engaged in mining in Alder gulch, and in the store business, retiring later to a ranch in the Waterloo community. Mrs. Vanderbeck preceded her husband in death March 27, 1923. Her death also occurred at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. M. Turk, in California. Surviving relatives include his son, James H. Jr.; five daughters, Mrs. Dutton (Bessie); Mrs. J. M. Turk (Lena) of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Ralph H. Dionne, (Alice), who is in Virginia City from Arlington, Calif., on a visit to her brother and Mrs. C. W. Rank, and who will remain for the funeral; Mrs. Ford Beardsley (Anna) of Los Angeles, and Mrs. W. A. Metzel (Amy) of Arlington; and one brother, Herbert Vanderbeck of Ovid, Mich. A son died in infancy, and his other daughter, Mary, died Oct. 7, 1931. Word of his death was a shock to relatives and friends alike, who grieve in the loss of a father, grandfather and friend.
