Description	:	JAMES HARVEY ALDRICH, was the eldest child of farmer Jethro Aldrich (1812-1901) and Mehetabel Moody Aldrich (1820-1903). James had 16 siblings. This letter was to his mother, Mehetabel. He enlisted in Co. B., 9th N.H. Vols on July 12, 1862. At Antietam he received a gunshot wound in his right leg and a bayonet thrust in his left knee. Two months later, as this letter reveals, he was able to march South with his regiment, camping at Wheatland, Va. on Nov. 1. He participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Mississippi campaign (e.g., Vicksburg, Jackson) the following year. On July 13, 1863, at Jackson, his company was assigned to picket duty to relieve a colored unit. Captain S. Judson Alexander was posting the pickets when he was mistaken for a Confederate and shot by one of his own men. Aldrich and another soldier carried Captain Alexander back to the rear then returned to their post. That night, while on picket duty, Confederates crept up to kill them. The picket besides him was killed and Aldrich was attacked. He received a sword wound in the groin, but he fought off the Confederate. His wound was not serious but bad enough to be detailed the next day accompany Capt. Alexander in an ambulance back to Milldale for medical treatment (for them both). It was a four-day journey. After reaching Milldale, the Captain died. He was then detailed to take the Captains body to Vicksburg and attend the burial. On the way back to Milldale, he contracted dysentery and was there two weeks until he recovered. He remained with his Ninth until the end the war. In Sept. 1865 he moved to Vermont. He later returned to New Hampshire, dying at Dalton, N.H. in 1915
