Harvey Davis, a farmer living about 5 miles southeast of Shelbyville, suicide by hanging himself to an elm sapling in a woods pasture near his house, last Friday afternoon. For some time past the wife of the deceased had been aware that her husband was subject to periods of mental depression. Indeed, he had told her that his mind was affected, but implored her to keep the matter from his relatives. On one occasion he told her that he intended to drown himself, and nothing but her continued vigilance prevented him from carrying his intention into execution. Last Friday, he went to mill, and while eating dinner, after his return home, declared that the miller had poisoned the meal, and becoming sick left the table and vomited violently. In the afternoon, Mrs. Davis, having occasion to go to a neighbor's house left Mr. Davis at home to take care of their youngest child, and taking the eldest, a little boy, with her. Reaching the creek, she found it so swollen that she feared to cross it and retraced her steps. Upon arriving at home she found that Mr. Davis had put the little girl to sleep but he was visible nowhere about the premises. Filled with alarm she hastened to search for him and in passing through the woods pasture, caught sight of her husband upon his knees. She called to him, inquiring what he was doing. Receiving no answer she approached nearer and discovered to her horror that he was suspended by a strip of hickory bark to a small limb only about eighteen inches above his head, and not more than four feet from the ground. The bark about his neck had been adjusted into a running noose; the man's hands were clenched firmly under his legs and all the evidences pointed to a deliberate, yet peaceful death, through a compression of the wind-pipe. Hastily releasing him from his position, and ascertaining that the body was lifeless, the agonized wife gave vent to cries and screams which brought the neighbors to the spot, and the body was removed to the house where it was prepared for interment. Mr. Davis was a consistent member of the Baptist church, an honest and conscientious man and a good citizen, whose tragic death is a source of keen regret not only to his relatives but to all the members of the community in which he lived.
