Thomas and one of Jackson townships prosperous and highly respected resident farmers died at his home last night after an ex-. Mr. Thomas was born June 26, 1844 in Rockingham county, Virginia, and at the age of eight yrs came to White county with his parents, Alexander and Lurenna Eaton Thomas, who followed the tide of emigration westward in 1852. The family first settled at Buffalo, later moving to Cass county and returning to White county in 1854 settling in Jackson township, where land was acquired by purchase. The son acquired his education in the common schools and the home farm was trained to habits of industry and frugality which was the foundation for his after success in life. At the age of nineteen when the call came for volunteers to put down rebellion, Mr. Thomas enlisted in Co. F, Ind. Vol, Inft., which was first commanded by Col. R.P. DeHart of Lafayette, later by Jasper Packard. He was mustered into service at Michigan City and continued with his regiment through the Nashville, Georgia and North Carolina campaign and though he took part in many engagements was never wounded. He remained a year in North Carolina after the close of the war and the expiration which time he bought the farm on which his after life was spent and were his death occurred. A skillful and painstaking farmer he developed one of the best farms in the county. Politically Mr. Thomas was affiliated with the Republican party but had never sought office. He was a member of the Christian church. On March 21, 1867 Mr. Thomas was married to Melissa J. Wright who survives, as do also six of the seven children who have been born to this union and whose names are George A. Thomas of this city; Mrs. Dora E. Barnes, William O., practicing attorney at Hammond Ind; Mrs. Sarah A. Berry; Everett A., and Flora Thomas. Mrs. Amanda VanVoorst, Mrs. Sarah Powell and Jacob W. Thomas, sisters and brothers of the deceased also survive. The funeral will be held today (Thursday) at the home. Interment will be made in the Lesenbee cemetery. Transcribed by Janie E. Gilbert
