Three of his favorite selections were sung by the choir with Mrs. G Jesse Hiner, Monterey, pianist. Mr. Gwin, the Eldest Highlander was a son of the late Renick and Barbara Gwin, and was born on the Cowpasture River, November 1, 1852. At the age of 16 he was a mail, carrier, carrying it on horseback from Monterey to Mountain Grove. In later years he was a farmer. It was only about five years ago that he left his native county to live with his son, Russell, who moved from Parnassus to Woodstock after his father moved with him. He was united in marriage to Martha Ervine who preceded him in death 13 years ago. To this union eleven children were born, nine boys and two girls. Edna and Mamie died when 12 and seven years of age. Surviving are his nine sons, Renick Gwin, McDowell, Virginia, Lloyd Gwin, Monterey; Charles Gwin, Los Angels, California; Clarence Gwin, Exenia, Ohio; Jessie, Staunton; , Virgil, Woodstock; Russell Woodstock; Warren Winchester; and Irving, Staunton; 24 grand children, 26 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Gwin, nonagenarian, celebrated his ninety-seventh birthday very happily on Sunday November 7, 1948, in his adopted home near Woodstock, Va. Mr. Gwin is a native of Highland, and spends much time in reminiscing about his native soil and former friends. Six of his sons and members of their families were present to enjoy a delicious birthday dinner planned and served by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gwin with whom he lives. Three sons were unable to be present.
