I of the 18th Iowa Infantry. He mustered out in July of 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas. The 1870 census finds James H. & Elizabeth back in Washington Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, with John Ross, b. ca. 1799 VA, as the head of the family. William, 19; Louisa, 16; and Margaret, 14, are also listed. The birth states of Elizabeth, William, Louisa, and Margaret are listed as Indiana in the 1870 report. However, six other census reports list Elizabeth's birth in Kentucky. (1850, 1860, & 1880 federal and the 1875, 1885, & 1895 Kansas State census reports) James & Elizabeth were in Coffey County, Kansas from 1875 to 1895. The 1875 and 1885 reports state that they came to Kansas from Indiana. The 1885 and 1895 state reports record James' service in the 18th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. James' age and birth location are listed in an 1884 GAR record from the LeRoy post. James H. Courtney is listed in the Kansas Deaths and Burials Index with the above dates. He is listed in a 1962 survey of veteran burials in Coffey County in the LeRoy Cemetery with his age-at-death listed as 70 years, 10 months, 16 days. It is possible that he is buried with his wife, Elizabeth.
