He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War and later in the National Guard. He worked as a Vet Tech for many years in Silverton, Oregon. In l986 he moved back to California. In 2006 he moved to Salem, Oregon, to be near his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, military history and model airplanes. He is survived by his mother and father, Lillian and Tony Mello of Eureka; daughters and sons-in-law, Nicole and Randy Riesterer of Turner, Oregon, Abigail and Jim Benjack of O’Fallon, Illinois, Denise and Travis Orr of Stayton, Oregon, Jennifer and Brian Clark of Stayton, Oregon, and Crystal and Scott Galvin of Aumsville, Oregon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Bev Giacomini of Eureka, Ron and Karen Giacomini of McKinleyville and Richard and Rhoda Giacomini of Martinez; sister, Marianne Mello of Eureka and sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Clark Keeney of Eureka; and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Carmen Courtney of Stayton, Oregon. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday November 15, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. at the Assumption Church in Ferndale, CA. The family would like to say a special thanks to Oak Hills Sanctuary, Willamette Valley Hospice, and North Santiam Funeral Service in Stayton, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice or to St. Bernard’s School.
