He enlisted on October 1, 1861 as a private at Ft. Scott, Kansas. He joined the Kansas 9th Calvary Regiment, Company D, on January 16, 1862. He mustered out on December 19, 1864 at Little Rock, Arkansas. ---- From the December 15, 1917 Iola Register: At one thirty this morning, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Kaufman, 311 South Second street. Mr. James H. Howland breathed his last. He was in the 86th year of his age. The funeral services will be held at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at the I.B. Church, and the body will be taken to Geneva cemetery for interment in the family plot. James "Henry" Howland. as he was familiarly known, was one of the pioneers of Allen county, having located here on a farm north of Iola, in the late fifties. When the war broke out he enlisted In the 9th Kansas Cavalry in which he served throughout the war; Returning to his homestead he engaged in farming the remainder of his active life. Several years ago he retired and since then has made his home In Iola. He was a man of the highest character, of a deeply religious nature, and of a very generous disposition. For more than half a century he has been one of the conspicuous figures in the town and county and he goes to his grave with the fulness of years and earning the respect and honor of all who knew him.
