Description	:	J. H. HORINE was born in Kentucky Mar. 24,1827. His parents moved from that state to Ohio when he was eight years old. From Ohio they removed to Indiana, and from there to Wisconsin in 1852, where Mr. Horine resided until 1891, when he removed to Newell. He was married to Miss Rachel Davis February 24, 1848. Nine children were born to them, four sons and five daughters, seven of whom are living. One of his daughters. From Ohio they removed to Indiana, and from there to Wisconsin in 1852, where Mr. Horine resided until 1891, when he removed to Newell. He was married to Miss Rachel Davis February 24, 1848. Nine children were born to them, four sons and five daughters, seven of whom are living. One of his daughters. Mrs. Nelson Sickels, with whom he resided at the time of his death, lives half a mile east of town. A son, J. M. Horine, resides five miles south of town, in Douglas township. His aged wife, the sharer of the joys and sorrows of a long and busy life, is left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Mr. Horine was converted when a young man and united with the Wesleyan Methodist church. He was a regular attendant at the M.E. church of this place and lived a consistent and exemplary Christian life. It is a source of comfort to feel that in his sudden death he was prepared for the change that awaits all the living. Mr. Horine was kindly and genial in disposition, was upright and conscientious, and had the respect and esteem of all who knew him. Funeral services were held at the home of N. Sickles on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 3 o'clock p. m., conducted by Rev. J. A. Lory, assisted by Rev. W. G-. Johnston, after which the remains was laid at rest in Newell cemetery to await the resurrection to eternal life. The relatives of the deceased desire us to express their sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who kindly and generously assited them, and for the sympathy they received during their sad bereavement. Our town was the scene of a terrible accident Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, in which one of our most respected citizens met instant death and a little girl miraculously escaped the same fate. J. H. Horine was driving into town from the north with a single horse and buggy. Julia Sickels, about eleven years old, was in the buggy with him, coming to school. The top of the buggy was raised and the side curtains were on. On approaching the railroad crossing, and when within one hundred feet of the track, the occupants of the buggy heard the whistle of a train. The train was a wild freight, from the west, running very fast. Mr. Horine could not see the train and attempted to cross the track. The horse and buggy were in the middle of the track when the engine struck them. The pilot struck tile front wheel of the buggy. The horse was thrown high in the air, Mr. Horine and the little girl were thrown fifty or sixty feet, but fortunately clear of the track, and the buggy completely demolished. When the horrified witnesses of the tragedy reached the place Mr. Horine was dead and the little girl was lying on the ground unconscious. The horse was also instantly killed and had been hurled many feet by the force of the collision. It was all over in an instant. The transition from life to death with Mr. Horine was instantaneous. F. L. Thomas, a grandson of Mr. Horine and a half-brother of Julia Sickles, was one of the first to reach the scene of the accident. He took the little girl in his arms, supposing she was dead, and started to carry her to Dr. Brooks' ofiice. She showed no sign of life until he readied the post office corner, when she caught her breath with a gasp. On reaching the doctor's office restoratives were applied and she gradually regained consciousness, but it was over half an hour before she was able to recognize her brother. Her escape from death was nothing short of miraculous. Beyond the terrible shock and the bruises caused by being thrown so far she was apparently uninjured, and had soon recovered sufficiently to be taken to her home, half a mile east of town. When Mr. Horine and the little girl heard the whistle they were unable to see the train on account of intervening buildings. Mr. Horine evidently supposed it was the morning clipper from the east, as he was looking in that direction and had taken his watch from his pocket to see if it was time for that train. It was about 8:20, and as the clipper is frequently fifteen or twenty minutes late a person knowing nothing about the approach of a wild freight would naturally suppose it was the clipper that was coming. The little girl told him a train was coming and he said he could beat it. Had it been the clipper he would-have had ample time and was without pain. The engineer of the freight train saw the semaphore signal of a clear track and answered it with a whistle. It was impossible for him, at the speed he was running, to have seen the horse and buggy in the moment that elapsed from the time he answered the signal until the engine struck them. We do not think any blame attaches to the railroad men. The only cause for censure is that trains, and especially wild freights, should not be allowed to pass a station at the high rate of speed at which this train was running. It was simply an accident which it seems could not have been avoided under the circumstances. The Coroner, Dr. L. M. Johnston, came down from Storm Lake and viewed the body and decided that an inquest was not necessary. It was one of the saddest accidents that has ever occurred in our town. One of our homes, without a moment's warning, has had the light of love and happiness obscured by the shadow of death, and the members of the family prostrated by the shock of their sudden bereavement.
