Mahone At a meeting of the Town Commissioners of Henderson, held March 29, 1904, the following minute was passed: The Mayor announced to the Board the death of Mr. James H. Mahone, Chief of Police. On motion the Board ordered the following minute entered upon its record; James H. Mahone was reared at Williamsburg, in the State of Virginia, and came to Henderson at the close of the Civil War. He married Martha, daughter of Geo. H. Rowland, Esq., a prominent and highly esteemed citizen and at one time Mayor of the town. For forty years he has been actively identified with the town and at the time of his death was one of its oldest citizens. He became a member of the police force of Henderson about twenty-five years ago and has remained in that service nearly the whole of time that has since elapsed. During the greater part of the time he has been Chief of Police. Mr. Mahone was quiet and unobtrusive in deportment, diligent in seeking out and bringing to justice violators of the law, regular and prompt in the discharge of his official duties and observant of the orders of the Mayor and the regulations of this Board. The years of his service are the highest tribute to his efficiency. He died Friday, March 25, 1904. This Board recognizes in Mr. Mahone’s death the passing of a citizen whose years have witnessed the transformation of our town from the country railroad station into a young city of life and progress, and the loss of an old and esteemed officer fro the pubic service. The Clerk will transmit a copy of this minute to the family of Mr. Mahone with assurances of this Board’s warm sympathy to their distress.
