He began his career in Burlington, where he was the city editor of a daily paper when only 17 years of age. Later he removed to Dunlap, Iowa, where he edited the Reporter, and became prominent in the republican politics of the state. While in Dunlap he wedded Miss Nellie Barrett, a daughter of the leading merchant and banker of the town. In 1895, he was called to Council Bluffs, and took charge of the Nonpareil when it was reorganized under its present management. Under his regime the paper became influential, and was widely read in Western Iowa. Two years ago he was sent to New York as the advertising representative of a number of the larger dailies of the state. Meantime his family had removed to Des Moines, and one year ago he returned to that city, where he became special representative of one of the largest insurance companies of Iowa. Mr. Purcell was a prominent member of several fraternal societies, and was looked upon as one of the most promising young business men of Des Moines. In Omaha he had many sincere and admiring friends. He had not yet reached his 35th year. He leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will take place in Dunlap Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30. PURCELL DEAD Well Known Newspaper Man Passes Away in Des Moines Word was received here yesterday of the death of James H. Purcell, at his home in Des Moines on Monday. Mr. Purcell was one of the best known newspaper men in the state, and from September, 1894, to April, 1895, was business manager of The Nonpareil. The announcement of his death came as a great surprise, as it was not generally known that he had been ailing. Three weeks ago he was taken with an infection of the ear, for which he was obliged to undergo an operation and from which he never recovered. Mr. Purcell leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will take place in Dunlap this afternoon. J. H. Purcell commenced his newspaper career when but 17 years of age as city editor of a daily paper in Burlington. Since then, he edited the Dunlap Reporter and has been connected with a number of the larger dailies throughout the state. About three years ago he became connected with the Midland Monthly, on leaving which he went into the insurance business. He was a comparatively young man, not having yet reached his 35th year. PURCELL Former Editor of the Reporter Is Called to the Beyond We are called upon this week to chronicle the sad and unexpected death of one who devoted many days of toil and his best efforts to the progress and standing of this paper. While editor, the name of J. H. Purcell and The Dunlap Reporter were synonymous. An attack of la grippe the past winter left him with an infection of an ear. Upon the advice of the family physician, deceased went to Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, to undergo an operation for relief. There seems to have been no doubt about a successful operation and his speedy recovery but the desired results were not attained and the patient never fully recovered from the effects of the operation, although performed by skilled and efficient surgeons. Mr. Purcell was born at Oquawka, Illinois, August 17, 1865, died in Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, April 11, and would have been 33 years of age his next birthday. He was married November 8, 1887 to Miss Nellie Barrett who, with two children, a son, Phil, and a daughter, Pluma, survive husband and father. Mr. Purcell was a printer and thorough newspaper man in which he was successful. Through his newspaper work he was quite well known to the fraternity and others throughout the state. On retiring as editor of The Reporter about four years ago, he subsequently became business manager and editor of the Council Bluffs Nonpareil. Leaving this position, he went to Des Moines to take charge of the advertising department of the Midland Monthly. Although a successful newspaper man and a writer of considerable ability, there was something about the work not in exact harmony with his nature and about a year ago, he turned his attention and energies to insurance business, becoming an agent of the Northwestern Life and Savings Company of Des Moines. The work was was found very agreeable to him and he met with phenomenal success in writing policies. He had a great capacity for work, especially at times, occasionally doing a week's work in one day. No task was to great for him to undertake. He was energetic and aggressive, polite and genteel, a friend of friends. Mr. Purcell began his newspaper career on the Carthage (Illinois) Gazette and later became city editor of the Kansas City Star going from that city to Chicago where he accepted a like position on a daily. He served as a special contributor to Chicago and New York papers for several years. So great was his success in the insurance business that he was to have been given the state agency for Illinois the coming year with headquarters at Chicago. Accompanying the floral offering from his company was the following tribute: Our honored and most special representative. The announcement of his death comes so suddenly that it is hard to believe that he has left earthly scenes for evermore. He was just entering the flower of manhood, with every expectation of life, was filling a useful and honorable career, and his future was bright and promising. The sudden death of such a one is a rude shock to strong men and appalling to surviving friends, even though death itself can have no terrors if it is but an awakening of the mortal into immortality. It is impossible to realize the darkness and sorrow and desolation of the wife and children bereft of one who was the light of their lives and guide of their actions. It will be beyond human power to lighten their burden, friends cannot lessen their sorrow; they can but tender in proper terms the condolence of friends who respected him and who sympathize with them. The floral offerings were elegant and numerous, the fraternal orders to which he belonged and the typographical union of which he was an honorary member, all being represented. Deceased carried about $10,000 life insurance, the amount being distributed in different companies. He was a Knights of Pythias, a member of the Modern Woodmen and of A. O. U. W. Yesterday morning at 6 o'clock, the remains were taken from the home, followed by the members of two Knights of Pythias Lodges, to the Northwestern depot and brought to Dunlap, arriving on the 2:04 train, thence to St. Patrick's Church where solemn rites were conducted by Father White, after which the body was laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
