PROMINENT HINSDALE MAN James Hosmer Had Been Assistant Treasurer of Williams College - Active Worker In Historical Society James Hosmer, 84, died at his home on Plunkett avenue, Hinsdale, Tuesday evening. He died of general decline and had been confined to home about three years. He is survived by his widow and his sister-in-law, Miss Sarah M Kittredge, who has lived in the family with them, also nieces who live at Los Angeles, Cal. The funeral arrangements have not been made, the condition of the other members of the home being such that no plans can be made. Mrs Hosmer is in very feeble health, Miss Kittredge is very seriously ill with pneumonia and Miss Lizzie D White of Boston, a niece of Mrs Hosmer who came to give assistance, was taken suddenly yesterday by a serious nervous breakdown, making it necessary to have the aid of three trained nurses in the home. James Hosmer was born in Boston, August 15, 1832, a son of Zelotes and Louise (Lawrence) Hosmer. Early in life he moved with his parents to Cambridge, where he lived until he came to Hinsdale in the fall of 1862. He was educated in the public and private schools of Boston and Cambridge, and was a graduate of the Hopkins classical school of the latter city. His father was an iron merchant in Boston, and he was for a time engaged in that business with his father. He married Miss Frances Jeanette, daughter of Dr and Mrs B F Kittredge of Hindale, December 14, 1859. Mr Hosmer was head accountant and confidential man of Plunkett woolen company for 24 years until the company went out of business in 1886. He was with the Byron Weston paper company in Dalton in a similar capacity until James White of Boston, his brother-in-law, was appointed treasurer of Williams college at Williamstown, when on April 1894, he became assistant treasurer of the college. This position was held until the death of Mr White three years later. The position of treasurer was offered him, but the offer was declined. For two years, however, he continued to be the acting treasurer of the college or until the late Charles S Cole was appointed to that position. His services with the college concluded his business connection and thereafter he lived a retired life. He was a member of the Congregational church from early youth. He was a charter member of the Berkshire Congregational club and a member of the New England historic and genealogical society of Boston. For the publications of the latter society he furnished from town and church records and from gravestone inscriptions in Hinsdale and several surrounding towns a large amount of valuable material. After his retirement from active business, out of pure fondness for such things, he gave gratuitously much time and labor in compiling and arranging for their preservation old church and town records. Mr Hosmer avoided rather than sought public office, but served on the school board in the years 1867, 1887, 1888, and 1889 and held the office of town treasurer for the years 1877 and 1878. He was a member of the cemetery committee since 1867, and to his untiring efforts on the committee is due a large share of credit the town enjoys for its beautiful and well kept cemetery.
