Description	:	James and his first wife Mahala Philips Brookman Hughes, bought land at the top of Gap Mountain in the late summer/early fall of 1843. They had one son, James Harvey Hughes. Mahala died in late 1843 or early 1844. James apparently took up with or married Margaret Smith. An unknown number of children were born to this second wife. James is still listed in the 1860 census. His Son James Harvey and his wife Sarah Ann Dodd Hughes is listed as living with the elder James.
