Description	:	Funeral services were held Friday afternoon from the Methodist church in Brooklyn for James I. Scruby who died at the University hospital in Iowa City Wednesday afternoon. James I. Scruby was born near Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, on February 11, 1862. He grew up in that community attending country school in the pioneer days. Some Indians still roamed the prairies and there was still much timber to be cleared to make the land tillable. Scruby was born near Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, on February 11, 1862. He grew up in that community attending country school in the pioneer days. Some Indians still roamed the prairies and there was still much timber to be cleared to make the land tillable. When he was 21 years old he went to Kansas where he lived one year and in 1885 came to Iowa and to Brooklyn. He farmed the land where the Geiger farm is now and where the Doty family now live. Later he added stock raising to his farming activities and farmed 400 acres. He was married in 1890 here in Brooklyn to Miss Annie Spitzer. One son, Fred Scruby was born to them in 1893. In 1918 he and his wife moved to town decided to give up farming on account of poor health. After that he did some work on farms when he was able and did gardening in town. The last three years he has acted as special police in town on Wednesdays during the time of the sales. He lived continuously in Brooklyn for 53 years and saw many changes. He saw good times and hard times in this community and thru it all he was always a good friend and lent a helping hand whenever he could. Six years ago his wife died and most of the time since then he has lived in his own home. This winter he has been in especially poor health and has spent some time at the home of his son, Fred Scruby, near Montezuma. He was taken to Iowa City last week for an operation from which he did not recover. Three brothers have preceded him in death, Will who died in California and Ed and Aaron who died in Des Moines.
