Jim, son of Nicholas Omer and Kathryn Marie (Wolverton) Brooks, was born July 27, 1919 on the family farm near Stanton, Nebraska. Jim, son of Nicholas Omer and Kathryn Marie (Wolverton) Brooks, was born July 27, 1919 on the family farm near Stanton, Nebraska. The second oldest of seven children, Jim spent his early childhood on the farm, attending elementary school at District 16, and high school in Stanton. A four year veteran of World War II, Jim was among the first group of Stanton County draftees inducted into the U.S. Army in October 1941. His training and service years were spent in various venues at home and abroad. While stationed in Hawaii, Jim was selected to become a cadet in the Army Air Corps' elite pilot training program. Upon graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant, he became a pilot and instructor of flying until his honorable discharge in 1945. On May 4, 1943, Jim was married to Kathryn Marie Stucker at the Congregational Church in Stanton. After working for his father's trucking business for two years, Jim built the required equipment, and started his own trenching and well drilling operation. He owned and operated that business until his retirement in 1975. Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathryn Brooks; children, Dr. Cheryl (Richard) Overy of Louisville, Kentucky, Bonnie Brooks of Eugene, Oregon, and Randy Brooks of Norfolk, Nebraska; grandchildren, Regan (John) Overy-Mattingly of Denver, Colorado, Kira Overy-Simpson of Louisville, Kentucky, Josh (Jill) Petersen of Tampa, Florida, Jordan Brooks of Paris, France, and Jacob Brooks of Cedar Falls, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Will and Bo James Mattingly of Denver, Colorado, George Simpson of Louisville, Kentucky, and Avery and Brooks Petersen of Florida; sister Naomi (Keith) Bodine of Norfolk, Nebraska; brother, Ben (Thelma) Brooks of Wichita, Kansas; and brother-in-law, Harold (Rosie) Robinson. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas Omer and Kathryn Marie Brooks; sisters, Elizabeth Dahlkoetter, Darlene Robinson, and Donna Mandl; and brother, Wendell Brooks. Inurnment was in the Stanton Cemetery in Stanton, Ne. Military rites will be conducted by the Nebraska Army National Honor Guard, Stanton V.F.W. Post 3602 and American Legion Post 88 of Stanton, Ne.
