Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. He was born June 24, 1930, in Petersburg, son of Ed and Frieda (Englehecken) Westhoff. He married Alyce Mensen on Oct. 17, 1951, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Manchester. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. While in the Army, Jim was recruited to play catcher for the Army baseball team. While on the team, he caught for Hall-of-Famer Whitey Ford, Dizzie Dean and longtime L.A. Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe. After serving in the Army, Jim declined an offer to play in the minor leagues to return to Iowa where he began to raise his family and start his career in milk processing at a plant in Luxemburg. Jim worked his way from bottle washer at Luxemburg to plant manager of Swiss Valley Farms, in Maquoketa. After his retirement, he moved to Delmar, where he was instrumental in renovating the Delmar Depot, transforming it from a machine shed to a popular museum. For his efforts at the Depot, he was awarded a commendation from the governor of Iowa. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Delmar, and the Delmar Lions Club, which recognized him with the outstanding achievement award. He had also volunteered at the Jackson County Historical Museum. Jim enjoyed Civil War history and bluegrass music. For the past two years, he was learning how to play the guitar. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Surviving are his wife, Alyce Westhoff, of Delmar; children, Andy (Joanne) Westhoff, of Jacksonville, Fla., Cathie (Steve) Jebsen of Delmar, Connie Smith (fiance Jeff Felton), of Jacksonville, Fla., John Westhoff of East Dubuque, Ill., and Jim (Cindy) Westhoff, Jr., of Greenwood, Del.; a sister, Rita Domeyer, of Dyersville; a brother, Thomas (Peggy) Westhoff, of Erie, Pa; nine grandchildren, Drew Westhoff, Evan Jebsen, Melissa Westhoff, Michelle Westhoff, Matthew Westhoff, Catherine Smith, Nicholas Jebsen, Robert Westhoff and Delaney Westhoff; a great-grandaughter, Khamil Jebsen. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lavon Domeyer; and a brother, Ralph Westhoff.
