Marcus Dies After Fiery Blows At Unison Sunday D.D. Hyland Exonerated Of Blame In Death Of Marcus; Hyland Not Detained As the aftermath of a bitter argument and an exchange of blows between J. J. Marcus and D. D. Hyland near Ebenezer on Sunday. Marcus died shortly after reaching his home near Unison. Death occurred as he sat with his family on the porch of his residence. At a coroner's hearing held in Leesburg today conducted by Dr. John A. Gibson, county coroner and Charles F. Harrison, commonwealth attorney, Hyland was exonerated in connection with the death. Investigating authorities claim Marcus to be the aggressor in the fisticuff. Marcus, 41, farmer and lifelong resident of the Unison-Bloom field community, is the father of five young children and has the esteem of the residents of Mercer District. Hyland is County Surveyor and makes his home near Unison. The tragedy grew out of a disagreement, it is reported, over the collection of a $2 account due Marcus for plowing Hyland's garden. When Billy Marcus, 17-year-old son in the Marcus family approached Hyland who was at the time on a mission near Ebenezer Church, the boy, according to accounts, was threatened. When the boy's father resumed the demand for his money, a fight ensued. Witnesses, one of whom was Hyland's brother, separated the two men. Severe blows are said to have been passed between the two. Marcus went directly to his home where he died soon afterwards. Friends from all sections of the community gathered at Ebenezer Church Tuesday for last rites for Mr. Marcus who in the course of his short life was well and favorably known to many. Burial was made in Ebenezer Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, Cassie Manuel Marcus and two young children a boy, Blakley, three years of age and an infant daughter, three months. Three sons by a former marriage also survive, Theodore, William and Earl Marcus, all at home. Pallbearers were Russell Cochran, George Freeman, Walter Williams, John Field, Joseph Lacey and Karlton Monroe.
