Batavia News - 5/31/1923 P. 5 Col. 2 OBITUARY ACTON James Jasper Acton, son of John and Elizabeth Acton, was born near Ashland, Iowa, September 16, 1848. He died near Eldon May 28, 1923 at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 12 days. He was united in marriage with Mary Lovina Pumphrey, October 31, 1869. Seven children were born to this union, all of whom but one are living and with their mother, who had been a companion with the departed for more than 53 years, mourn the loss of their loving husband and father. They are H E Acton of Walnut, Kans., Mrs Frank Hite of Fairfield; F S Acton and Mrs Jesse Loy of Batavia; Mrs J W Peebler of Cedar Edge, Colo.; and G C Acton of Eldon. One daughter, Mrs Emma Barthelow is the one who preceded him in death four years ago. Besides these there are 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Joe Acton of Britton, Okla. and Andrew Acton of Eldon. There are many other relatives and a large circle of friends and neighbors, who will miss the cheerful, jovial and hearty greetings of him, who has been so long a resident of a far extended community of acquaintances. On October 31, 1919, Mr and Mrs Acton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary which is a privilege very few are, by Providence permitted to enjoy. His entire life has been spent in the immediate community. On account of this, his passing is like a land mark in the place where it stood. The familiar face of a lifelong old settler of a community will be missed for many a day. He will be more missed because of his sturdy, faithful Christian life and character. Mr Acton was converted to the faith of his Saviour at Old Ashland when he was 16 years of age. As the church records show in the year 1892 or '93 he with his wife transferred their membership to County Line. He helped to organize the County Line Church in 1868 to '70. The church was built and dedicated in 1876, the dedicatory service was held in the fall, under the pastorate of Rev John B Hill. The funeral service was held at the home southwest of County Line, Thursday, May 31 at 3 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev C E Fitzsimmons. Interment was in the Ashland cemetery.
