James ( Jim) Phillips, 84, of Lafollette, a native of Beech Ford Community, died Sunday at the University Of Tennessee Medical Center at Lafollette after a long illness. The New River native had been a member of Red Oak Missionary Baptist Church for more than 60 years.He had lived in Lafollette since 1965 and moved to Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Lafollette in November of 1988. Phillips had also owned a grocery store on Beech Fork.His wife,Sarah Byrge Phillips, died in 1981.Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack J and Mary M. Phillips and Virgel and Shirley Phillips all of Lafollette, six daughters and four sons-in-law, Eva Bunch of Monroe, Mich., Erva McCulley of Clinton, Ollie and Jasper Carroll, Elley Mae and Bennie Ellison, Lorine and Terry Mikels, all of Lafollette, and Reba and Owen Chapman of Caryville, 31 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in the chapel of Martin Lake City Funeral Home with the Rev. Joby Byrge, the Rev.Pitney Seiber and the Rev. Robert Kennedy officiating. Burial was in Beech Fork Cemetery.
