The Daily Notes, Canonsburg PA, Wednesday 10 October 1917, front page - JAMES JOHNSTON DIES IN 78TH YEAR ---- Well Known Farmer Passes Away at His Home in Cecil Township --- JAMES JOHNSTON, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Cecil Township, died this morning, at about 3 o'clock, at the home of his son, J. HARVEY, on the old Johnston homestead. Mr. Johnston had followed farming all his life, and was successful in his chosen occupation. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Johnston was born in South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, in 1840, and was in his 78th year. He removed to Cecil Township in 1866, and has resided there ever since. He was united in marriage to MISS SARAH BELL November 24, 1874. She died March 7, 1892. Mr. Johnston is survived by the following sons and daughters: JOHN B., ROBERT, J. HARVEY, of Cecil Township; MRS. MARY E. BARNES and MRS. LAURA SAWHILL. A sister, MRS. W. P. MORGAN, of West Pike Street, also survives. Mr. Johnston was a consistent member of the Greenside Avenue U. P. Church. Funeral services will be held at the home of his son, J. HARVEY JOHNSTON, in Cecil Township, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Read less
