Cahalan, 64, a farmer living near Dougherty, was found in four feet of water in the Kelley gravel pit pond 3 1/4 miles south and 1/4 mile east of Cartersville at 2:15 Thursday afternoon by Sheriff Tim Phalen and deputies. Cahalan, who is survived by his wife, and three brothers, Fred Cahalan, head of the hemp mill in Mason City, and Harry and W.S. Cahalan, Cartersville, and a sister, Miss Sarah Cahalan, Mason City, had been missing since Wednesday noon. At 12:15 Wednesday noon he left the home of a tenant, J.H. Watermiller, in the Cartersville vicinity, stating he was going to look at some horses. He was on foot. The sheriff was notified at 10 a.m. Thursday that Cahalan was missing and organized a searching party. At the Kelley gravel pit, the deputies found a hat identified as belonging to Cahalan, lying in a few inches of water. This led to a search of the 75 yard long pond. The body was taken to Dougherty. Coroner R.E. Smiley stated that the drowning was apparently accidental. Mr. Cahalan was born June 2, 1880, at Claremont, Iowa, the son of P.H. and Bridget Cahalan. He had resided in the Dougherty community about 55 years. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Dougherty, with Father Flannon Cannon officiating. Burial will be at Dougherty. The Hogan Funeral Home in Charge.
