Description	:	James Julson, one of the earliest pioneers of this section, passed away at his home in Groton, Sunday evening at about 11 o'clock, following a stroke of paralysis, with which he was stricken about a week or ten days previous. He was about 75 years of age at the time of his death. Proved up in 1881: He was born in Manitowoc, Wis., Sept. 27, 1856, and was a son of Ulrich and Ragna Julson, who were natives of Norway. When he was eight years of age his parents moved to Greene county, Wis., and resided there until 1873, when he moved to Alamakee county, Iowa, and in 1876 moved to Mower county, Minn. He received a country school education and at the age of 21 left home and engaged in farming on rented land and threshing during the fall, following this vocation two years or until the spring of 1880, when he came to Brown county and obtained work with the construction crew then laying the road through to Groton and also worked on the Ellendale branch from Aberdeen north when but a few sod shanties and some tents composed the total building program of the county seat. During the winter of 1880-81 he worked on the southern Minnesota railroad shoveling snow, and in the spring came to Brown county and took up the NE1/4 8-122-61, starting in upon his new life with two horses, an old cow, a $10 wagon and $15 in money, driving from Watertown in a covered wagon to his sod shanty which served as a dwelling place for the first two months for his wife, a son and himself. With this meager start he gradually broadened his operations until he was known as one of the most successful small grain farmers in this locality before his retirement from active agricultural pursuits. Married in 1879: He was married September 27, 1879, to Miss Mattie Hanson, a native of Norway, and five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Julson, three of whom are still living--Oscar, Edward and Herman. Their eldest son was born in 1880 and died in 1896, while a daughter, Rose, passed away in 1886. His wife died on December 24, 1910, and he was married to Mrs. Mary Johnson, of Pierpont, on October 5, 1917, who together with his sons, a sister, Mrs. H. A. Boe, of Grand Meadow, Minn., and two brothers, Sever Julson, of Olympia, Wash., and Herman, of Northfield, Minn., are left to survive him.
