James K. Bates, Former Local Man, Dies in Nebraska
Relatives in Fairfield have received word of the death of James K. Bates, in Tekamah, Nebraska, a former resident. The funeral services are being held there this afternoon. He was a brother of Ed Bates of Fairfield and Perry Bates formerly of Fairfield now in California. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews in Fairfield. He is survived by his wife and six children. The Bates' visited in Fairfield last fall. He has been in poor health for some time but was only seriously ill about one week. He died on Tuesday.

FORMER FAIRFIELD RESIDENT LAID TO REST IN TEKAMAH
TEKAMAH -, Nebr. Sept. 5 -
Funeral services for the late J. K. Bates (sic. James K. Bates) were held Friday afternoon, August 23, from the Presbyterian church, in charge of Rev. Clayton Valder of Omaha. Two favorite songs of the deceased "Isle of Somewhere" and "There Will Be No Night There" were sung by Mrs. Will Brune and Mrs. Harvey Loerch, with Mrs. Racheal Holmquist as accompanist. The pallbearers were D. W. Greenleaf, C.A. Valder, Cha. Shafer, Frank Crannel, Arnold Schrawger and George Grothe. Interment was made in the Tekamah cemetery where the Odd Fellows lodge of which Mr. Bates had been a member for 25 years, conducted the ritualistic burial service.
James K. Bates was born October 11, 1859 at Fairfield, Iowa, departed this life at Tekamah, August 20, 1935 at 10:45 p.m. Aged 75 years, 10 months and 20 days. He was a son of Ephrian (sic. Ephriam) and Mary Bates, both of whom passed away several years ago. He was united in marriage to Lucy M. Workman at Tekamah, October 20, 1887 and to them were born eight children: Mrs. Altha Bradford of Ottumwa, Ia., Mrs. Mabel Braun of Omaha, Mrs. Marie West of Herman, Rollo, Harold and Arthur Bates of Tekamah. One son, Orville, died at the Great Lakes naval training station at Chicago, Sept. 23, 1918 and one daughter, Cecil Love (sic. Cecile Love Bates per her inscription) passed away at Fairfield, Iowa at the age of 3. He is survived by his widow and six children, also two brothers: Perry Bates of Hollister, California and Ed Bates of Fairfield, Iowa, besides several grandchildren. All the children, his wife and his brother Ed, were at his beside when he passed away.
He was a member of the Prebyterian church, also of the I.O.O.F. lodge, the Encampment and the Rebckahs (sic. spelling ??). Mr. Bates moved to Tekamah from Fairfield, Iowa 28 years ago and since that time has made many friends who mourn with the relatives over his demise.

Husband of Lucy Matilda Workman Bates. Married October 20, 1887 at Tekamah, Burt county, NE.
Lucy Workman and James K. Bates and her sister, Lena Workman, and Scott John Charlton were married in a double ceremony Oct. 20, 1887 in Tekamah, Nebraska. The Workman family had moved to Tekamah in 1886. The two men were from Buchanan township, Jefferson County, Iowa.
