January 31, 1911 - Carroll Sentinel - James Kelly died at the home of one of his daughters, Mrs. Francis Stephens, of Omaha, last week and was buried in St. Joseph's cemetery in this city last Saturday. For twenty-one years Mr. Kelly was the faithful flagman at Main street crossing for the Northwestern Railroad company. He was a familiar character to our citizens for every day, no matter what the weather conditions were, he was always at his post of duty. James Kelly was born in County Carry, Ireland, in 1821 and would have been 87 years old if he had lived until next October. When twenty-one years of age he came to America and located in West Virginia. Five years later he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Rowley in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1880 they moved to this county and located in this city where he has made his home until about two years ago when he went to Omaha and lived with his daugther Mrs. Stephens. The deceased was not in good health for some months past but was able to be up and around until the Sabbath prior to his death. His sickness was due to stomach trouble which had been a great source of annoyance during the past few years. His wife lived in this city twenty-five years ago and now the remains of her husband rest beside her. To Mr. and Mrs. Kelly were born six children three of whom are dead. Those surviving are: Mrs. Minnie Best, Mrs. Mary Kelly and Mrs. Francis Stephens all of Omaha. There are living fifteen grandchildren and four great grand children. Our citizens remember the faithful old flagman who for so many years looked after the railroad crossing on Main street. He was a kind and obliging man and held in the highest esteem of our citizens for there are few in our city who do not remember him and regret to know that he has answered the call of the Maker to bid farewell to loved ones and friends and join the great majority that have done before. His daughters were present at the funeral and desire to express their appreciation of the kindnesses shown them and especially to the members of the K.C. council who had charge of the burial of their dear father.
