Miles City, Feb. 18. - (Special) - Funeral services were held here on Saturday morning for James Kennedy, 77, of Rosebud, who was stricken early in the week with an attack of uremic poisoning and taken to the hospital at Forsyth for treatment, where he died on Thursday. Mr. Kennedy was a pioneer, having come to Fort Keogh by river steamboat in 1877. He had been a resident of Custer and Rosebud counties ever since. On May 27, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Horiskey at O'Neill, Neb., who preceded him in death about three years ago. The survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Aroy Swart of Cartersville, and five sons, Richard J., Walter L., William J., Harry and Joseph, all of whom live in Rosebud. A sister, Mrs. Katherine McMahon of Brooklyn, N. Y., also survives. Mr. Kennedy was born in Syracuse, N. Y., on Oct. 24, 1850. As a boy he migrated with his parents to Clayton county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, and attended school at Dubuque. He came up the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers in the spring of 1877, landing at Fort Keogh that was established by the late General Nelson A. Miles. His first labors consisted in the carrying out of a contract to furnish hay for the fort. During the winter months he hunted buffalo. In 1878 he secured permission from the government to build a cut-off road through the hills north of the Yellowstone river opposite Hathaway. It was used by the stage line then operated between Fort Keogh to Bozeman. He also operated a toll gate and stage station there and was postmaster of Buell until that office was discontinued owing to the competition of the Northern Pacific railroad that built it's line through this region in 1882. In 1910, Mr. Kennedy sold his ranch property north of the Yellowstone and purchased a ranch on Rosebud creek. Having previously engaged in the cattle business, he continued in that vocation until he retired a few years ago to make his home in Rosebud, where he had acquired extensive property interests.
