Read More	Iola Register April 18, 1913 JAMES L CHRISTY IS DEAD He was one of the Pioneers of Kansas, an Old Soldier and a Much Respected Citizen. One of the most highly esteemed and prominent pioneers of southeastern Kansas is James L. Christy, who came to to this portion of the country during territorial days and took part in the exciting events which formed the history of Kansas prior to the Civil war. With the era of progress and improvement he has also been connected, bearing his part in reclaiming the wild land for purposes of civilization. No history of Allen County would be complete without the record of his life. He was born in Rowan County, Kentucky, July 12, 1840, the eldest son of John A. and Nancy Christy, who came to Allen County in 1860. The mother died June 25, 1870, at the age of fifty-four years, and the father passed away July 29, 1897, at the advanced age of eighty-five years. James L. Christy accompanied his parents on their removal to Illinois during his early boyhood and also went with them to Missouri. In 1855, thinking that he would like to see more of the wild west he came to Kansas, locating first in Bourbon County, where he was employed on a farm. There he worked for three years, during which time the border troubles broke out and he joined John Brown's party. He was right in the midst of the border difficulties and saw service under Generals Montgomery and Lane, participating in the battle of Osawatomie. He was well acquainted with John Brown, the Abolition leader, whom he says was a very good man and used to preach to his followers every Sunday. When the trouble was over Mr. Christy returned to his work. He was a great hunter and would often accompany the Indians on their hunting expeditions. He also killed, December 27, 1893, the last deer ever shot in this county. When Captain Gordon, the United States surveyor, divided the county into sections, Mr. Christy drove the ox-team hauling the stones used in the corners of the sections. In 1850 he returned to Missouri on a visit, but in 1860 again came to Kansas, where he watched with interest the oncoming tide of events that involved the country in war. James L Christy died at his home in Geneva Township at 7 o'clock this morning April 18, 1913. The funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Wilbur Fisk officiating and the remains will be interred in the Geneva Cemetery. Several months ago Mr. Christy who was in his 74th year suffered a stroke of paralysis. He partially recovered, but he never regained his former strength. For some weeks past he has been perceptibly failing, so that the news of his death was not unexpected. "Jim" Christy was one of the pioneers of Allen County. Born in Rowan County, Kentucky, June 12th 1840 the eldest son of John A. and Nancy Christy, he removed with his parents first to Illinois, then to Missouri. In 1855, prompted by the spirit of adventure, he came to Bourbon County, Kansas, working for three years as a farm hand. During the border troubles of '57 and '58 he was with the Free State forces and saw some real fighting with Montgomery and Jim Lane and old John brown, having been with the latter at the battle of Osawatomie. The same spirit that prompted him to have a share in these border raids was responsible for his prompt response to the call for men to save the Union. This writer has heard him tell with a smile how he hurried to Leavenworth, going much of the way on foot, fearing the war would be over before he could get to the front. They waited for him. He enlisted in the Third Kansas Infantry, and upon its consolidation afterwards with other Kansas regiments, became a member of the 10th. with which he served gallantly to the end of the war. Returning to Allen County , Mr. Christy was married in 1867 to Martha E. Morris who survives him, and who was always a faithful and loving wife to him. To them were born nine children, all girls, of whom seven are still living, as follows: Mrs. Emma Smith of Chandler, Oklahoma; Mrs. Mamie Howell, of Anderson County; Mrs. Henry Grimm and Mrs. Jessie Troutwine of Geneva; and Misses Ruby, Mattie, and Lizzie, who remain at home. Everybody who knew him liked to call him "Jim" Christy, for he was big and buff and hearty, and somehow seemed to fit him. he was a man of the open, a splendid type of the brawny, powerful men who conquered our frontier, who found themselves in their element when hard work was to be done with a dash of adventure to it and when dangers were to be faced. As a boy he often joined the Indians on their hunting expeditions, and none of them could excel him in feats of skill or strength. he took to war when it came as naturally as an eagle to the crag, and had no other thought while it lasted but to go where he was sent and stay til he was ordered to leave. But like most brave, strong men hewas never quarrelsome. On the contrary he was friendly and helpful and kind, overflowing with god will as he did with good humor. He was a good citizen as he had been a good soldier, and while he had passed three score and ten and his work was done, still his friends were not ready for him to go and they will mourn him a long time.
