Entering the place to see if everything was all right, Sherrill noticed a coat and hat laying on the counter and then discovered the tragedy. A doctor was summoned and the authorities notified. An examination showed a bullet wound in the region of the heart and a 22-caliber revolver nearby. No inquest was held. Ill health was believed to have prompted the act. James L. Thompson was born at Falls Branch, Tenn., May 15, 1889, the son of James and Isabelle Thompson, and died January 28th, 1940. He came to Albion in 1905 and for a time was employed at the Albion House, later going into business for himself on Main street. This he sold to the late H. J. Welding and enlisted in the Navy and in June 1918, entered training at the Great Lakes training station, and at the close of the war, returned to Albion. He bought a half interest in his former business and moved to the location on Fourth street. This partnership continued for 16 years when he sold his interest and moved into his own building, formerly occupied by the Citizens State Bank, which he was operating at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Ora Standerwick on December 30, 1920. Two sons, James L. and Robert Laverne came to gladden the home. He was always interest in civic enterprises. In October, 1922, he met with a painful accident while in line of duty as a volunteer fireman from which he never fully recovered. Always in pain, he bore it with patience and stoicism. He was a kind and considerate husband and father. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by one brother, William, of Smith Center, Kansas. Funeral services were held at the Smith Funeral Home Wednesday morning at 10:30 with Rev. Jas. McKeeman of the Congregational church officiating. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery, where the American Legion conducted the service. (Albion Weekly News – Albion, Nebraska – February 1, 1940)
