James enlisted in Co C, 150th (O.N.G.) Regiment. In 1880 he married Mary Titterington, daughter of James & Eliza Titterington, of Orange township. James resided in Bedford township after the war. He was a member of Royal Dunham GAR Post 177, Bedford. His name is on the Civil War Monument in Bedford Square. He was an extensive dealer in livestock & agricultural pursuits.
