Hobaugh: Man's family roots traced to the Hessians Man's family roots traced to the Hessians Although the first Hobaughs came to Westmoreland County as Hessian mercenaries hired to fight for the British, the Hobaughs in the ensuing years fought major battles for the United States. In his book, 'A History of Paintertown,' James Hobaugh recalled how his ancestors in their admiration for the Colonists' cause, deserted the British Army and joined the Colonists in the Revolutionary War. James L. Hobaugh, a resident of Delmont, died from complications of a stroke on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was 83. Mr. Hobaugh's ancestors fought in the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. 'They were farmers, miners, mill workers and railroaders. Men and women who weren't afraid of hard work,' said James Hobaugh's son, Stephen. Born and raised in Paintertown, Westmoreland County, Mr. Hobaugh was one of two children of the family of William J. and Mary T. Kuhns Hobaugh. He grew up during the Great Depression. 'My grandfather (William J.) was proud of the fact that during the darkest days of the Depression, he never lost a day's work. He found some kind of work to support his family,' Stephen Hobaugh said. While attending Irwin High School, Mr. Hobaugh would go out on the neighboring farms after school and pick berries, said his son. After graduation from high school, Mr. Hobaugh had several jobs, including a short stint with a cereal factory, until he entered the Army in 1942. By that time, he had been introduced to Mary 'Pat' Ford of Wilkinsburg. As a master sergeant with the 1st Calvary Division, Mr. Hobaugh saw action in the Pacific, including the Philippines and many of the Japanese Islands. By that time, Mary and James knew they wanted to get married. They were married in October, 1945, after Mr. Hobaugh was discharged. In the late 1940s, Mr. Hobaugh, after attending business school, worked at Westinghouse and prior to his retirement in 1979, had risen to the position of administrative manager at the Westinghouse Youngwood Plant. His family recalled Mr. Hobaugh as a talented musician, who as a youngster was taught to play the mandolin by his mother. Throughout his life, Mr. Hobaugh also enjoyed hunting, fishing and exploring in the woods. Another son, Bill, recalled how his father would take himself and his brother hunting and fishing. 'Dad was there when I got my first squirrel and he was there when I hooked my first fish,' he said. 'Dad could name almost all the plants and animals as we took our walks.' James and Mary Hobaugh were charter members of the Faith United Methodist Church of Delmont, where Mrs. Hobaugh also was the church historian. Mr. Hobaugh was a member Shidle Lodge 601 F&AM, 32nd Degree Mason Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh, Syria Temple of Cheswick, Elks Lodge 907 of Latrobe and VFW Post 481 of Delmont. Mr. Hobaugh is survived by his wife, Mary 'Pat' Hobaugh; two sons, Stephen Hobaugh of Arnold, Md., and William Hobaugh of Greensburg, Westmoreland County; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Dias. A funeral service was held Saturday in the chapel of the Vincent V. Rodgers Funeral Home, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, with the Rev. James R. Wagner officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon Township. He was born Oct, 3, 191 7, in Paintertown, the son of the late William J and Mary T [Kuhns] Hobaugh. He was an administrative manager at the Westinghouse Youngwood Division, retiring in 1979. A World War II veteran, he served in the U S Army as a master sergeant in the Pacific Theatre with the 1st Cavalry Division for three years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Delmont. Shindle Lodge 601 F&AM, 32nd Degree Mason Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh, Syria Temple of Cheswick, Elks Lodge 907 of Latrobe and VFW Post 481 of Delmont. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and an accomplished musician. He researched family genealogy and wrote the Paintertown history text. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary "Pat" [Ford] Hobaugh; two sons, Stephen Hobaugh and wife, Judith, of Arnold, MD, and William Hobaugh and wife Joyce, of Greensburg; and two granddaughters, Christina Hobaugh of Arnold, MD, and Jennifer Hobaugh of Greensburg. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Dias. Friends will be received at the Vincent V Rodgers Funeral Home, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James R Wagner officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon Township. Masonic services will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
