Description	:	James Layton Stroud was the son of Pinkney & Susan Ann Layton Stroud and husband of Sallie J. Rhodes Stroud. After the death of James Layton Stroud she married J. L. Hopkins. She is buried beside J. L. Stroud. J. L. Stroud's tombstone reads, Died Oct. 18, 1898, age 36 yrs., 7 months. (This would place his birth date around March of 1862. He was probably born in 1860 or 1861.) James L. and J. Ollie Stroud (his brother) are mentioned many times in the Diary of William Pierce Thornton of Mountain Shoals (Enoree, SC). On March 3, 1895, Mr. Thornton wrote that he went to see James L. Stroud, he being crippled. On May 3, 1895 bought J.L.Stroud a cow. On Dec. 27, 1896, noted that J.L.Stroud was down with the fever, and went to see him. On Jan. 19, 1897 Carried Stroud some Slippery Elm bark and stayed with him. On Jan. 30, 1897 noted that Jim Stroud was able to sit up. On Jan 2, 1898, went to J. L. Stroud's at Enoree, this was Mr. Thornton's last entry about James Layton Stroud.
