James Leroy Ferguson is said to be the man named in the Francis M. Gillum family tradition, the man who formed a posse to apprehend the killers of Francis Gillim. This James Leroy Ferguson was the father of our Missouri Artemis (Ferguson) Gillum". Information supplied by Tommy & Rita McCaw: Notes- James and Zerelda both said to have been married before, James has 3 duaghters by his first wife, name unknown. His parents were from Scotland. (Author's Note): On file is a "U.S. and International Marriage Record, 1560-1900 document showing that James L. Ferguson was married in 1837 to Zerelda ???. This document also show he was born in GA and she was born in TN. They were married in AR. After searching and annualizing the census records as well as other sources I have come to the conclusion that this certificate date is in error. I feel this is a typo and should have read "1847". I am treating it as such, and this makes more sense as the first three daughters were issued from James and Lucinda (Warren) Ferguson. 1850 Federal Census: Shows he was born Abt. 1816 in TN. Could not read or write.
