Read More	LOCAL MAN KILLED IN SIGHT OF HOME -------------------------------------------- James Jefferson, City Employee, Struck By Machine Sunday. -------------------------------------------- OWNER EXONERATED -------------------------------------------- Fatally injured when struck by an automobile within less than a hundred yards of his home on Princess Anne Street just over the city line yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, James L. Jefferson, 59, lifelong resident of Fredericksburg, died an hour later in the Mary Washington Hospital, being one of three Virginia automobile victims Sunday, all of whom were residents of this general section. Mr. Jefferson, who is widely known in Fredericksburg where he has spent all his life, was crossing from the Sunshine Lunch room to the West side of Princess Anne, on which his home is located, when struck by a machine going south and driven by H. J. Burman, 42, representative of a Lansing, Mich., refrigeration manufacturing concern, who comes occasionally to this section on business trips. Although traffic was fairly heavy at the time of the accident and many persons were either in their yards or on porches enjoying the balmy November air, only two persons so far as could be learned, saw the actual crash. They were Mrs. Mary Bissonette, and Fred Heath, both of whom live in the immediate section of the fatal crash. Mrs. Bissonette was standing near her home at the time while Heath was driving a car directly behind Burman's machine. HIT HEADLIGHT. According to accounts, Mr. Jefferson started across the street with the belief that he had plenty of time to avoid the approaching car. Before reaching the West side of the street, on which the Southbound traffic passes, Mr. Jefferson, it is believed, misjudged his position with relationship to the approaching car and instead of waiting for it to pass, jumped for the other side of the street and directly into the headlight of the car. He was knocked some distance. Burman, who was driving at a moderate rate of speed, stopped his machine immediately as did Heath, the latter reaching the injured man first. Mr. Jefferson was unconscious, suffering with a fractured skull and other injuries. He was taken immediately to the Mary Washington Hospital by a Wheeler & Thompson ambulance driven by Vernie Davenport, but died an hour later. BURMAN EXONERATED. Mr. Burman, who was traveling alone en route from Washington to Atlanta, was held on his own recognizance while the accident was under investigation by Chief of Police S. B. Perry, Commonwealth's Attorney W. B. F. Cole and City Coroner Dr. John E. Cole. Dr. Cole rendered a verdict in which the accident was held to be unavoidable with no criminal responsibility involved and Burman was released last night. Mr. Jefferson, it was stated, suffered from impaired eyesight and wore glasses with heavy lenses. It is believed that this may have caused him to misjudge the distance between himself and the car when he was crossing the street. The deceased, who was well known here, was the son of the late William Jefferson and a nephew of the late Larkin Jefferson, of this city. He had been an employee of the city for five years, doing work at the city incinerator. A keyfold, railroad watch and billfold which Mr. Jefferson had on his person when struck were missing from his person when taken to the hospital and if anyone found same they are asked to turn then over to the family. Mr. Jefferson is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Henry Lovett, Mrs. Raymond Harper, Mrs. Howard Pritchett, Mrs. Lee Carter, Elliot Jefferson, all of Fredericksburg; Mrs. James Allen, Harold Jefferson, of Richmond and Miss Evelyn Jefferson, of Washington. Funeral services will take place from the home tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Forrest J. Prettyman, pastor of the Methodist Church. Interment will be in the City Cemetery.
