The 1850 census shows James and Behetheland Lyon, both aged 79 (born c1771) living at Peters Creek in Stokes County. Genealogical data from Virginia County Record, Vol.9, by Wm. A. Abbot, of Mobile, Alabama, shows James Lyon Jr. (III) at the bottom of column three and his son Francis Strother Lyon at bottom of column five. William Martin Moore Will of James Lyon (born 12/25/1778 in Henry County, Virginia, died 08/30/1858 in Stokes County, North Carolina) from the Stokes County, North Carolina WB 4, page 319, dated 07/19/1858: "In the name of God I James Lyon of the County of Stokes & State of N. Carolina knowing the uncertainty of this life & being of sound & disposing mind & memory do on this 19th day of July AD one thousand Eight-hundred & fifty-eight make & publish this my last will & testament hereby revoking all other wills by me made declaring this to be my last & only true will & testament in manner & form as follows, to wit, First to the infinite mercy of God I commend my soul - Item: I will & bequeath to my grandchildren Margaret Martin, Myra Martin, & Joseph Martin, children of my deceased Christina Martin who intermarried with Joseph Martin, the sum of one hundred dollars each. I desire that my Executor shall pay the above legacies to Margaret Martin & Myra Martin as he may deem their necessities demand the legacy above provided for my grand son Joseph Martin I desire that my Executor shall pay to him with interest when he shall have attained the age of twenty one years. I desire the above legacies to be paid out of the money found in my effect at my death and if there be not enough to pay the same I desire the deficiency to be made up from the proceeds of the sale of my stock of cattle, horses, hogs, household & kitchen furniture, the excess, if any, to be appropriated as herein after provided. I will & bequeath to my daughters Sarah W Flippin, wife of Joseph F Flippin & Francis F Flippin wife of Samuel M Flippin, and my four grandchildren, Mary Moore, Elizabeth, William and Francis Moore being the children of my deceased daughter Nancy B Moore late wife of William M Moore. The lands on which I now reside being in three tracks situated on the south side of Dan River containing four hundred & ninety two acres by estimators to be divided equally one third to my daughter Sarah W Flippin, one third to my four grandchildren Mary, Elizabeth, William, & Francis Moore, and in case they cannot agree in the division of said land in my will that each party shall choose one disinterested free holder, making three in all, who shall proceed & make the division in such manner as they shall deem to be right & proper. Now it is my desire to secure to my two surviving daughters above mentioned only a lifetime interest in the lands above mentioned and after their death then the share of each respectfully shall go to the heirs of their body for ever. Item: I give & bequeath to my daughter Sarah W Flippin wife of Joseph F Flippin one Negro woman Mary now in possession of the said Joseph F Flippin, together with all her present & future increase to have & to hold during her natural life then to the heirs of her body for ever. Item: I give & bequeath to my daughter Francis F Flippin wife of Samuel M Flippin during her natural life the two children of the Negro woman Susan who died a few years ago in the possession of the said Samuel Flippin together with all their future increase also a Negro woman named Rachel with all her future increase also my old blind man Sampson & I desire that my said daughter Francis F Flippin shall support this old man comfortably and for the purpose of which I give & bequeath unto her the sum of two hundred dollars to be paid from the proceeds of the sale of my household & kitchen furniture, stock of horses, cattle hogs plantation utensils & after the legacies above provided for the children of my deceased daughter Christina Martin have been paid. Item: I give & bequeath to my grandchildren Mary Moore, Elizabeth Moore, Wm Moore, & Francis Moore being the children of my deceased daughter Nancy B Moore, late wife of Wm M Moore, a Negro women named Josephine now in the possession of Wm. M Moore, together with all her present & future increase & my old man George to be held by them and their heirs for ever, and to be divided equally between my four grandchildren above named or as many of them as shall be alive when the oldest has attained the age of twenty one years, or if any of them should marry before the time mentioned for the division above it is my will that the division should be made at that time. Item: I give and bequeath to my son Francis Lyon my man Alfred and to my sons James & William Lyon I give the sum of one dollar each and to the heirs of my deceased daughter Christina Martin not herein before mentioned I give the sum of one dollar each. It is my will that all my property personal & real not otherwise disposed of or remembered by me shall be sold and after the legacies above mentioned money have have been paid the excess if any shall be divided equally one third to the children of my deceased daughter Sarah W Flippin and one third to my daughter Francis F Flippin. And, lastly it is my will should my beloved wife Behetheland survive me that she shall retain for her use what ever of my property may be deemed necessary to support her comfortably as long as she may live.
