Blackburn ... was ... a private in the Ohio 24th Light Artillery. This unit served as guards of captured Confederate soldiers. James was mustered out June 1865 and married Martha "Mattie" Higgins in September 1865. I have attached the newspaper clipping of the wedding announcement which is confirmed by the Ohio marriage records on Ancestry. In the 1870 census Martha Blackburn is listed as a widow with two male children. Cyrus age 3 and James age 1. In the 1880 census Martha has remarried to Nelson Edson and they have two daughters (Mary and Annetta) and Cyrus Blackburn is living in the same house. James is missing. In the 1900 census Cyrus is now going by James C. Blackburn and is married to Catherine (last name unknown). Also in the 1900 census Martha has remarried again and is widowed again, now a Greenwood living with her daughter Jessie Greenwood. This new last name can be confirmed on Annetta Edson's death record. Martha states that she has given birth to four children, all four still living. In reality she was the mother of five children. I suspect that James b. 1869 was given up for adoption. My reasoning is that Martha wouldn't have concealed the existence of a child who had died, but she would if he was given up for adoption. I think I will need to send for James M's military pension packet to confirm. "Martha Higgens Blackburn Edson Greenwood dies in 1909 and is Find A Grave memorial # 5448705. In the 1910 census, Jessie Greenwood is living in the home of J. C. Blackburn and wife Catherine, reconfirming the relationships. The 1920 census is uneventful. The 1930 census finds James C. Blackburn a widower residing as a patient in a hospital. "I have requested the military record for George W. Blackburn. I found a George W. Blackburn who died January 2, 1865 in Savannah, GA and was in the Ohio 66th...."
