Description	:	James M Cole was born in 1849 in New York state, the son of Mary (McDillon) Cole. He arrived in Iowa about 1870 and resided Onawa, Monona County IA in August of that year. James married Mary Ann Callaghan November 22, 1875 in Woodbury County IA. He arrived in Iowa about 1870 and resided Onawa, Monona County IA in August of that year. James married Mary Ann Callaghan November 22, 1875 in Woodbury County IA. They were the parents of six children: - a daughter who died very young; and - five sons: Al, George, Frank, Fred, and Earl (memorials linked below). Following their marriage, James and Mary Ann first resided near Blencoe IA then farmed in Little Sioux township, Woodbury County IA near Oto; and later in Sherman township, Monona County IA two miles south of Blencoe. James and his family, traveled "out west" for about five years where he pursued farming and drayage opportunities in Washington and Idaho Territories. Accounts vary, but records suggest the time frame was from about 1885 to 1890. In early 1889, the entire family resided in Lincoln County, Washington Territory, near present-day Wilbur WA. Their 1889 residence was 30 miles southwest of Fort Spokane (the nearest cavalry situated on the Columbia River), and 30 miles west of Davenport WA (the nearest railway station). The area was frontier wheat-growing country, traversed by a stage line that serviced the mines in northern Washington. Until arrival of the railroad in Wilbur later that year, no towns existed west of Davenport in Lincoln County WA. James was a skilled driver and horse handler. His son George recalled the adventure of helping his father drive 31 horses from Idaho to Sioux City IA in 1892, a trip which took three and a half months from June 26th to October 8th of that year. George also mentioned providing drayage service for the 1898 Missouri River bridge crossing project at Chamberlain SD. Following their return to Iowa, he and Mary Ann divorced. James later spent time with sons George and Frank in Coleridge NE and with sons Al, Fred, and Earl in the Anthon/Oto area. He died in 1918 at son Al's farm in Grant township, Woodbury County IA, six miles southwest of Anthon. [NOTE: The 1915 IA census record appears to list James' birthplace as "Batavia" NY, which is in Genesee County. Further details about his parents and possible siblings are currently unknown.]
