At half past two o'clock on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 24th the soul of James M. Harper vacated its earthly tenement and joined the majority of those gone before. But although he is dead and earthly scenes and associates will know him no more his character and disposition were such as to endear him to a large circle of friends in whose minds and hearts his memory will live more ineffaceable and enduring than any monument of marble could perpetuate it. He was a sociable light-hearted temperament and had in a marked degree, the happy faculty of making friends of all with whom he came in contact, wherever he went. He had been ill for a period of three weeks with typhoid pneumonia, and during that time his friends were on the rack of anxiety hoping against hope for his recovery, which alas! was destined never to take place. Somehow the month of April with its opening buds and flowers and its trees and vegetation becoming greener and more luxuriant every day, prophetic of the bounteous summer, seems an appropriate time for the close of a young and hopeful life like that of James Harper, who at the time of his death was but twenty-three years and eight months old. His life, too had all the joyousness and cheerfulness of spring in it, and in after years when the thoughts of his friends revert to him, they will recall none but pleasant associations severed too soon. Besides the sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Harper, four brothers and four sisters survive to mourn his untimely death. They are Robert, John, Charles, Mrs. Geo. Spratsford, Mrs. Geo. Maylone, and Mrs. Joseph Zybarth, all residing in Muscatine county; William, who lives in Nebraska, and Miss Margaret, a resident of California. The funeral, which was an unusually large one, occurred Friday morning from the residence to St. Maththias' church, and thence to St. Mary's cemetery, where the interment took place. The pallbearers were Messrs. Frank Boland, John Dowdal, Cornelius Toohey, James Healy, Frank and Edward Healy. THE EVENING JOURNAL - MUSCATINE, IOWA - Tuesday, April 30, 1895 James M. Hopper, of Lake township, died at his home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon of typhoid fever. The deceased was in the 24th year of his age and is survived by four brothers, four sisters and his parents. The funeral will occur Friday morning from St. Matthias church.
