Description	:	DEATH'S HARVEST -- James M. Smith died on Wednesday afternoon, 29 Aug 1917 at the home of his step-son, William Shelton on Muddy Creek, this county. He had been sick for a week. Deceased was born on 12 Mar 1840, in Bath county, Virginia, and during the civil war served in the Confederate Army in Co. K. Second Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was twice wounded, both times in the leg, the first wound being received at Chancellorsville and the second at Gettysburg. He was always a cripple in consequence of the wounds. Alderson, Greenbrier County WV, Sept 1. - James M Smith died on Wednesday afternoon at 5:45 at the home of his step-son, William Shelton, on Muddy Creek. He had been sick for a week. Deceased was born on March 12, 1840, in Bath county, Virginia, and during the Civil war served in the Confederate army in Co K, Second Virginia Infantry. In 1867 he was married in Bath county to Mrs Mary Shelton and soon after they came to this section and settled on Muddy Creek. His wife died nine years ago. Mr Smith is survived by four children. They are: John D of Fairview; J H of Meadow Bluff; Jasper L of Lick Top and Mrs Maggie Mitchell, of Farmdale. He is also survived by a stepson and two stepdaughters. They are William Shelton and Mrs Bettie Brown of Muddy Creek and Mrs Neely Rookstool of Grassy Meadows. Mr Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church. The funeral took place yesterday, interment being made in the cemetery at Lewis church. Contributor: FG# 48825891.
