While still a young man he went to Washington County, Pennsylvania to reside and on November 18, 1849, was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Mount. To them was born four children, two of whom, Mrs. Sarah A. Karns of Chicago, Illinois, and William J. Whitham of Phillips County, Colorado, survive their father. In 1850 he moved with his family to Fairfield, Iowa where on the 2, day of May, 1855 his wife Catherine died. On the 21, day of February 1856, at Fairfield, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emily A. Dravo. To them 13 children were born, of whom nine, namely, Charles W. of Fairfield, Iowa, Hamlin H. of Everett, Washington, Martin L. of St. Joseph, Missouri, Frank H. of Holyoke, Colorado, John W. of Everett, Washington, Emily of Holyoke, Colorado, Mrs. Grace Hilsebeck of Holdrege, Nebraska, Rollo C. and Nellie of Holyoke, Colorado, survive their father. His widow, Mrs. Emily A. Whitham, with whom he spent over 41 years of married life survives him. In 1880 he and family moved from Fairfield, Iowa, to Thayer County, Nebraska, where they resided till 1886 when they moved to Imperial, Nebraska, and at that place he engaged in the lumber business with his son H. H. Whitham. In September 1887 he and the family moved to Holyoke, Colorado, where they have resided since that date and where he has been engaged in the hardware business. The deceased, while residing in Washington County, Pennsylvania, united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. When he moved to Fairfield, Iowa, he united with the Lutheran Church and when he removed to Nebraska he presented his church letter to and took membership with the Presbyterian church and his membership remained with that church at the time of death. He had been for over 53 years a worthy and highly respected member of the I.O.O.F. The deceased had been a very active business man during his whole life and old age still found him so actively engaged in business pursuits that his many friends were surprised to hear of his sudden dangerous illness and hoped to see him up and engaged in his business again within a few days, but it was not to be. He seemed to rally for a time but the complication of diseases was more than his advanced age could withstand and he gradually became weaker from day to day. From the date that he became a resident of Holyoke no resident of the town was more actively interested in any and all undertakings which had for their object the bettering of the condition of the people of our county and the development of the natural resources of this new country. He was a man of exemplary habits and character, beloved by his family and many friends and honored and respected by all who knew him. The family has the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon November 7, from the M.E. Church under the direction of the Holyoke Lodge of I.O.O.F., of which the deceased was a member, Rev. Abbott preaching the sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Holyoke cemetery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ J. M. Whitham came from Imperial, Neb. where he had been in business for several years. He first opened up a small shanty but soon had as find a store building in readiness as could be found in Holyoke. He does a good business and is very popular.
