| Description | : | James Mackie was born in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1820 to David Mackie and Elizabeth Laird Mackie. James was a coal miner, as was his father. In 1844 he married Mary Lamon. In 1848, the Mackie family emigrated to America, changing their name to Mackay along the way. The family lived briefly in Cass, Pennsylvania before settling in Allegany County, Maryland. James first worked as a coal miner, but later was a school teacher in Frostburg. James died in 1893.
