Arnold died on Sunday Evening, Dec. 16th, 1883, at his home in Oakland, Md., after a short but severe season of suffering, at the ripe age of 71 years, 9 months and 22 days. The deceased was born in Washington County, Md., on Feb. 24th, 1812. Early in life he moved to Frederick, City, Md., where he became a prominent citizen and an exemplary Christian. He was not only honored with a place in the city council, but also in the council of the church, and a guide to the in Sabbath School. He united himself to the Lutheran Church when about seventeen years of age, under D. Shaeffer, who was then pastor of the Lutheran church. On April 14th, 1867, he came to Oakland, Md., where he has lived and labored during the remaining period of his life. Being faithful to the Lutheran church from his youth, when he came to Oakland and found no Lutheran Sunday School he was not satisfied with this state of things, so he gathered the faithful women and the few brethren and founded a Sunday School in the Lutheran church. He not only organized it, but superintended it for a number of years. Although he of late years, on account of age, was relieved of the burden of superintendent, he was retained to the last as Vice-Superintendent, and he always gladly and joyfully performed all the duties imposed. For much of the time he was councilman in the Oakland Lutheran church. While he made no great demonstrations of this christian graces and character, his humble, faithful life impressed all who met him with the fact that he been with Jesus and learned of Him that heavenly wisdom which cometh from above. His life of faith in Christ, and his devotion to the cause of God exemplify the spirit that possessed him to be the Spirit of Christ. He leaves to mourn his departure a devoted wife and five children, and a host of true friends, and the church of his choice especially. But our sad loss is his rich, eternal gain. Let us then not weep as those who have no hope, for he is not dead, but sleepeth until the trumpet of God shall sound to awake the sleeping children of God. About fifteen minutes before his death he offered a fervent prayer that all who labored with him in church and Sunday school and all his family might so live that his eyes then closing might again behold them all in happy reunion around the throne above. While we bow with humble submission to the dark providence in his removal, we realize the great loss to his family and the church. May his mantle with a double portion of this spirit fall upon at least in his bereave family and the church. The funeral services were held in the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Oakland, Md., on Tuesday, Dec. 18th, 1883, and his remains placed away in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The Pastor, Rev. Wm. Stoudenmire, was assisted by the pastor of the M.E. Church, Rev. M. W. Rider.. the funeral was largely attended, though the snow storm was terrific all day. The bereaved family has the hearty sympathy of church and community. May the lord prove a husband and father to the widow and children, and bring them and all of us into His kingdom and of rest and glory for His name’s sake. Amen. W.S.
