It is highly probable that quite a number more of the families in their neighborhood will be induced to come out here and locate permanently. -------- Marshall County News (Marysville, KS), Friday, December 20, 1889, pg 3, col. 5 James Madison Barringer died at the residence of his son-in-law, M. C. Brainard, in Oketo, on Saturday Dec. 14, 1889 aged 75 years 9 months and 10 days. Funeral services conducted by .... Monday 16th inst. After which the remains of the deceased were borne to the Marysville cemetery where they were laid to rest beside those of his wife. As Mr. Barringer was one of Marshall county's early settlers a brief biography may be of interest to the readers of the News. He was born in Rensselaer county, N. Y. March 24, 1814. In early life he learned the blacksmith trade and that of stove (stone?) maker in Troy, N. Y. He was married to Jane Roberts in 1838 and was the father of nine children, six of whom are yet living. Came to Kansas in 1872, settled on an improved farm .... east of Marysville, where his wife died in January 1878. He sold his farm and returned to Troy, New York, in 1888, remaining but two years when he again came to Kansas, and has since made his home with his children - the last two years with Mrs. Brainard. Three of his daughters - Mrs. Geo. Hamilton, Mrs. Brainard and C. F.
