James Marion King was born in Hancock county, Illinois, on Jan. 6, 1857, and passed away in his home near Oak Hill, Kansas, Feb. 23, 1935, aged 78 years, 1 month and 17 days. When a small boy his parents moved to Iowa, and at the age of 14 years he came with them to Kansas, where they homesteaded the farm 1 1/2 miles east and 1 mile south of Oak Hill, and in this neighborhood he lived the rest of his life having spent 49 years on the old homestead, where he died. On July 21, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Crawford. To this union nine children were born, three sons and six daughters, three of this family proceeding him in death. On Oct. 23, 1905, Mr. King's wife was taken from his side; a son, James, passed away in childhood, and a daughter, Mrs. Eustatia Klintberg, a few years ago, on Sept. 4, 1908. Mr. King was united in marriage to Miss Martha Addie Warner. No children were born to this union. Those who are left to mourn their loss are his devoted wife, seven children - Mrs. John Malcolm of Topeka, Mrs. Lewis Rickle of Oak Hill, Mrs. Emil Telander of Clay Center, Mrs. Albert Stetler of Oak Hill, Wm. O. King of San Diego, Calif., Clay King of Oak Hill an dMrs. Owen Gish of Guthrie, Okla., also one sister, Mrs. Wm. Smith of Lost Springs, Kansas, two half brothers, Robert and Walter King of Abilene; twenty grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren: many other relatives and a host of friends, as Mr. King was a stranger to no one. Mr. King was a member of the Dunkard church and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Oak Hill. He was good husband father, accommodating neighbor. He was honest and upright in all his transactions, believing that honesty in the only policy; hard working and industrious all his life, believing that industry makes for thrift. He was good hearted and jolly, enjoying the companionship of his neighbors and friends. James King was one of the early settlers in the Oak Hill neighborhood, so he knew what pioneer life was like. He knew what hardships and privations meant. He knew that difficulties honestly met and problems rightly solved would strengthen character, develop real rugged manhood and womanhood. Funeral services were held in the Oak Hill Presbyterian church on Monday afternoon, being conducted by the pastor, Elmer H. Bleam. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. O.U. Need, Mrs. James Goheen, Mrs. Fay Lyttle and Mrs. Geo. Ernsberger, With Mrs. Arlie Yeaney at the piano. Burial was made in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The large floral offerings and the service rendered by his many friends and neighbors during his last and prolonged illness, speak volumes as to the high esteem in which Mr. King was held.
